Asia to become person in Missile Technology Control Program

NEW DELHI: We applied for the membership of MTCR a year ago and all the procedural formalities are completed.
Significantly, China, which stonewalled India’s entrance into the 48-country Nuclear Suppliers Group ( NSG ) at the just- concluded Seoul plenary, isn’t a part of 34-country MTCR.
Since its civil nuclear deal with the US, India continues to be striving to enter export control regimes like the Australia Group, MTCR, NSG and the Wassenaar Arrangement that regulate chemicals, nuclear, biological and the conventional weapons and technologies.

Italy which is unhappy with New Delhi over the marines dispute opposed India’s case in MTCR. Yet, after both marines, accused of killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast in 2012, were permitted to return, their resistance have dampened.
India’s attempts to enter into the MTCR also got a boost after it agreed to join the Hague Code of Conduct, coping with the ballistic missile nonproliferation arrangement, previously this month. MTCR membership will enable India to purchase high end missile technology as well as improve its joint ventures.
